A drop to drink (a 100 word freaky flash fiction horror story) by Oren Shafir

desert flash storyFor the first time, Jason thought that they might just actually die out there. That his naiveté might have cost him not just his own life, but that of Gina, and God help him, his unborn child. The jeep was far away now. The farm farther. And home farther still.

He imagined turning the tap on at home in America. The water bursting out. So simple and abundant. So reckless. He looked at Gina’s lips, white and cracking. What he wouldn’t give right now to feel a stream - or even a drop - of beautiful, clear, life-giving water. They exchanged a look. Even if he had known what to say, he couldn't have made the words come out. He drew her towards him. That’s when he felt a drop on his foot. Jason looked up. Could it be? Could it really be? Then Gina said it, “I think my water just broke.”
